Chai Five, with vocalist Emily Pelc

Saturday January 21, 2012
Dinner seating begins at 7 p.m. / Show 8:30–10:30 p.m.

The Chai Five is a Peninsula-based group of musicians who mix the Klezmer tradition with modern styles and interpretations. While honoring the past they don’t treat Klezmer as a museum piece, cemented into place like a 1920’s Jewish wedding. The music is alive, growing, and changing.  You will hear some of the familiar songs and modes. You will hear freilachs and horas and bulgars. You will also hear jazz, a 1940’s hit, some rock riffs, and a penny whistle. The evening will also feature lyric soprano Emily Pelc accompanied by pianist Jeffrey Jones. They will perform transcriptions of Ladino and Eastern European Jewish folk tunes arranged by Massenet, Ravel, Milhaud, and Algazi, and also music from the Jewish theatre by Weill and Goldfaden. This is not your grandmother's Klezmer concert!
