Maestro Eric writes...
In my lifetime, I have experienced great shocks of artistic recognition, moments that seemed to instantly open up new vistas of understanding. One was hearing The Rite of Spring for the first time. Another was Mahler. My very first experience with Stephen Sondheim’s music was much like an earthquake. read more
I was in my early twenties. I heard a rave review on the radio, and soon I was watching Angela Lansbury and George Hearn on stage, doing, of course, Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. It left me reeling, as did discovering A Little Night Music, Sunday in the Park with George, Pacific Overtures or virtually any of his shows. I’ve long come to the conclusion that Mr. Sondheim could well be our greatest composer, up there with Gershwin, Copland, Bernstein, et al. The only reason that he is not, I’m convinced, is the snobbery that many serious musicians feel towards musical theatre. That is changing; Sweeney has been done by many opera houses, and we aim to give it the full symphonic treatment! I'm delighted to be working once again with Ken Malucelli, who also directed our concert treatments of The Mikado and Candide.
Note: If you want to see this show in advance, get a hold of the Angela Lansbury live performance. Do NOT see the Tim Burton movie; it's dreadful, and not for the reasons you think (I’ll explain at the pre-concert lectures!) On the other hand, the show ends with a really shocking surprise, so perhaps you should just wait!
