Another stop in Rumania for Ligeti’s Concert Romanesc, written in a somewhat more modernistic, Bartók-inspired idiom than the Enesco.

Then, two classics of the standard repertoire. Mendelssohn’s concerto is a wondrous thing, a lyrical and perfectly constructed work delicately poised between the classical world of Mozart and the new Romantic language. Rounding out the program, Brahms’s first stab at composing a symphony attempts a similar balancing feat and succeeds in its much more ambitious goal of updating Beethoven’s symphonic writing with some of the latest techniques.

Note: This performance of the Brahms First Symphony takes place after Redwood Symphony has recorded the work for our next CD release.
