Some Do's and Don'ts
for Parents
Do...
...stay for the lesson and observe, but
please do not speak or otherwise interact during lesson times.
...read the lesson assignment sheet each week and go over it
with your child.
...supervise your child's daily practice
sessions, at least for the first year. You do not have to be a
musician yourself; simply being there to help keep your child
focused is just as important. During lessons I will tell you what
to look for, especially bad habits that need to be
avoided. Remember, the more your child practices a bad habit,
the harder it will be to break!
...play lots of high-quality
music for your child to listen to (Need suggestions? Let me
know.)
...take your child to as many concerts as possible.
Learning an instrument means not only playing, but LISTENING AND
OBSERVING OTHERS PERFORM. Take advantage of the many
local performances.
...enforce a consistent practice period
for six days a week, and at least 30 minutes per day.
...place your child
into a musical ensemble when I suggest that your child is ready. Being in
a group makes music much more fun.
...remember that I am always
available by email or phone to answer any questions or concerns
you may have.
Don't
...get angry with your child if s/he makes a mistake. Like any art form, music-making is as much
about the process as the product. Learning doesn't
happen without mistakes!
...worry if another student
at the same level as your child progresses faster. Each student
moves at his/her own pace; that's the beauty of learning
music. The only timetable a student needs to follow is his/her own.
Some Do's and Don'ts for Students
Do...
...arrive
at each lesson well prepared. My job is to teach you new
concepts. Your job is to work on those concepts at home and come
to lessons with an improved piece. Then we can then move on to bigger
and better things.
...remember to bring your books AND your
lesson sheet from the previous week.
...keep your nails
clipped short AND your hands clean. If possible, please wash
your hands before coming to your lesson; otherwise you'll
need to spend valuable lesson time washing hands.
...remember that while music can be hard work, it's fun
too! Enjoy the process of learning your instrument, and perform
often for the people you know!
Don't...
...get
discouraged!
