Your $30 is due now.

Our treasurer is Janet Sloan; she sits in the cello section, 3rd stand outside (next to Lynda Bloomquist, who made those fantastic chocolate-chip cookies last week!).

LOGO SUBMISSIONS

Some members of the orchestra have expressed their desire for a new RSO logo. Others want to keep the old one. The Board has asked to approve any new logo prior to its use.

We would like to invite any of you to propose a design for a new logo. In the future, we'll have official plans for who will review the designs, and for how any new logo would be selected.

HOW TO SELL $25 GALA CONCERT TICKETS
-Peter Stahl

Talk up the orchestra

"You may not know it, but I play in a very accomplished orchestra in Redwood City. We've recorded two CDs that you can buy at Tower Records-they're in the Stravinsky section, mixed in with CDs by the Boston Symphony and the Berlin Philharmonic."

"Yeah, every Wednesday night I rehearse with Redwood Symphony. You know, our concerts are all rebroadcast on a radio station in the North Bay, and our December concert will be shown on cable television all over northern California."

"Most people don't realize it, but the orchestra I play in performed the West Coast premiere of Leonard Bernstein's last major orchestral work, scooping the San Francisco Symphony and the L.A. Philharmonic."

"Not too many professional orchestras attempt the full Mahler Symphony cycle, but Redwood Symphony is just one concert away."

Talk up Eugene Fodor

Use copy from back of Gala flyer.

Deflect objections that it's too expensive

"Twenty-five dollars is the price of the cheapest seat for the San Jose Symphony's gala. For that price you can sit up in the peanut gallery in San Jose, or you can sit up close to a world-class performer at our concert."

"Twenty-five dollars is not just for the concert; there's a reception afterwards with entertainment and fabulous food. You'd probably pay that much just for a great party, and we're throwing in the concert for free."

"Ten dollars of the ticket price is tax-deductible, and it says so right on the ticket. So if you're in a 27% incremental tax bracket, it's like getting a 10% discount!"

Deflect disinterest in classical music

"West Side Story is terrific music, period. It's loud, it's soft, it's jazzy, it's danceable, it's fusion, fugue, salsa and ballad wrapped into one. You've got to hear it!"

"Didn't you see 'Amadeus?' Of course you did. Mozart's music isn't just any old classical music; it is divinely inspired and the closest to perfection man has come. And then there's the mystical element of the Masonic symbolism. And the stuttering "Pa-pa-pa-pa-geno" of the main theme. You really ought to hear it." [Editor's note: I never saw Amadeus; I couldn't get a date.]

"Symphonie Espagnole is a true virtuoso showpiece. You'll see Fodor do things with a violin you didn't think were possible. That man literally makes that instrument sing. Actually, I can't seem to get that music out of my head, it's so singable."

Reassure about logistics

"Most people don't realize it, but Caņada College couldn't be easier to get to. It's practically on top of Interstate 280. There's plenty of free parking."

"The weather that night will be glorious. Remember how nice it is at the end of September? It's our Indian Summer-no wind, nice and warm."

"The concert hall only holds 550 people, so it will be an intimate setting. You're assured a good seat; there aren't any bad ones."

"Redwood Symphony concerts aren't cold and impersonal like those other symphony concerts. The hall is small, and the musicians really connect with the audience, like at a rock concert. We're actually encouraged to show our enthusiasm."

"We moved the concert from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night so it wouldn't interfere with your beloved [Niners-Giants] [Raiders-Jets] [Giants-Rockies] [A's-Angels] game."

Make this a special, once-in-a-lifetime event

"Look, I've never approached you before about coming to one of my concerts, but this one is really special. It's the tenth anniversary of the orchestra, and we have a real world-class soloist. I promise I won't bug you again for another ten years."

"Listen, I spend lots of hours practicing, rehearsing and performing with this group. I pour my heart into it, and so do a lot of other very talented people. I think we've created something very special, and I'd like you to see what we've done. This concert is going to be a truly special experience, I promise you."

"If you're interested in what I do when I'm not here, this is your best chance. This event will be fun and rewarding."

"Don't you want to see me in a tuxedo/concert gown?
