Message from our Executive Director
--Claudia Herzog
As usual we need people to help with the following areas:
- Press Releases - complete the press releases for the year
(we have some written, but were missing some bios so
could not finish them). This task involves contacting the
soloists/groups who have yet to send in bios and writing
press releases using a very simple format that has
already been established.
- Refreshment Coordination - contact people to provide
either homemade or store bought cookies/treats and
drinks. We have an existing network of people (thanks to
Nicki Kerns, bass section) who have been like little
elves in making sure our concerts are well fed and
watered. However, we need someone to take over the task
of coordinating the people who have generously
volunteered in the past.
Then there are more far reaching tasks that include:
- Liaison to Caņada College (Faculty, Student Body,
Executive Office, etc.)
- Liaison to Community Groups
- Liaison to Music Community (Music Teachers, Other musical
groups, etc.)
- Liaison to Other Arts Groups (Theater, Artists, etc.)
- Liaison to Press/Reviewers (People who can review us and
help us get exposure in the community)
- Grant/Corporate Funding (We are getting a generic grant
proposal written up that everyone can use. We need to
coordinate a drive to also reach out to our corporations
for funding opportunities. Timing will be good if we can
get something rolling in the January time frame when
everyone has "new" money).
Note: Participation in orchestra planning efforts has
dramatically dropped off since the gala. Now that we have had
another concert and the chance to "recover" from the
efforts of the gala, we need to regroup and get focused again or
we will lose all of the good momentum that was established for
RWS in September. The opportunity to really have impact on
the future of RWS is here now. This represents valuable
experience that perhaps you can't get at work (management,
creative planning, strategic direction, etc.).
Also note: Many of these tasks require that we are first able
to define who we are. This means being able to describe
ourselves as an organization, being able to describe why people
play with us as members of the orchestra, why people come to see
us play, and why people should be interested in investing in us.
This definition process has not yet happened. The effort to
define our charter, etc. will be lead by Griff Derryberry and
Claudia Herzog. Anyone else who wants to participate should
contact Griff or Claudia.
Once RWS direction is decided, we have some fun, creative
projects to pursue
- Logo Creation - to update our image and create an event
to publicize our rebirth
- T-Shirt/Sweatshirt Design - based on the new logo
- Season Brochure - it's getting to be that time of year
again
Standing Announcements
- For this concert, we will be using a chorus made up of
orchestra members to demonstrate songs that appear in the
Ives Second Symphony. Volunteers are welcome. Rehearsals
(probably two) are yet to be worked out. We could also
use a volunteer to research and find sheet music for
these songs. Some songs can be done in unison, some solo,
some parts, some maybe even as barbershop quartets.
- Anyone who doesn't think he/she will be used in the
Carmen orchestra may want to consider singing in the
chorus. Contact Nile Norton at 408-255-4927.
- The Redwood Symphony concerto competition will be on
Sunday, March 10, beginning at 10 a.m.. Please clear your
selection with Eric first.
- Orchestra members are encouraged to get tape copies of
our concerts, as it will help you to assess our (and
your) playing. Simply ask Eric what length of tape is
needed, and give him a blank for him to copy on to.
- We need a volunteer to help with the supertitles in
Carmen. Dan Swinehart has kindly agreed once again to put
the titles onto slides to project over the orchestra.
Viennese Ball Volunteers Needed
Eric will be conducting the annual Viennese Ball at the
College of Notre Dame (Belmont) for the benefit of the Music
Department's Music Scholarship. The event will be on the evening
of February 17 (the weekend after our concert).
Rehearsals: Thursday, Feb. 15 at Caņada (no RWS rehearsal
that week, by the way) and the morning of Feb. 17 (10:00 a.m. at
Ralston Mansion).
Minimum Players Needed: 3 1st violins, 2 2nd violins, 2
violas, 2 cellos, tuba, 2 flutes, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet, 1 bassoon,
2 trumpets, 1 percussionist, keyboard. Also welcome: electrified
bass, extra clarinet, horn(s).

"Redwood Symphony Notepad" which is distributed to
members of the Redwood Symphony at rehearsals. The newsletter and
this online version are edited by George Yefchak.
