Redwood Symphony now has a Producer for each concert we present. What's a Producer? Simply a person who makes sure all the pieces are in place for the event to happen smoothly. For most concerts, this means making sure publicity and advertising goes out on time, arranging any required staging (e.g., piano tuning & moving), working with our outstanding lobby staff to ensure sufficient ushers, snacks, etc., and making sure the soloist has what he or she needs. It isn't a lot of work, and you'll get recognition and the immense satisfaction of seeing the happy audience (and musicians) as your show goes off without a hitch. And the job is finished on the day of the concert.
As Producer, you have the full resources of Redwood Symphony at your disposal, and you have considerable latitude for coming up with creative ways to promote and present concerts. We are currently seeking Producers for all of this season's concerts. If you're interested, or just curious, talk to Claudia Herzog (violin).
In June two dozen RWS members trekked up to Skywalker Ranch outside San Rafael to record the song cycle NakedMan with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. The recording came out beautifully and is available for purchase from Claudia Herzog at a discounted price. The price for orchestra members is $10.70 for the first copy and $15.00 for any additional copies. If you played in the recording you are entitled to one free copy; please see Claudia if you haven't yet picked yours up.
We are trying to improve our mailing list. Please bring your address book and please help us add names and addresses (and E-mail addresses) to our mailing list. We want to have larger audiences! Please come see Claudia Herzog (violin) if you have any comments. Claudia can be reached by e-mail at cherzog@netscape.com.
Redwood Symphony is a class at Caņada College. If you play regularly in the orchestra, you must enroll in the class and pay the registration fees. Only by registering all members can we maintain good relations with the college. If you haven't yet registered, please do so now; see Orchestra Manager Kristin Link (violin) for the form. Kristin is keeping close track of who has registered and who hasn't, so she will be contacting those of you who haven't. Please save her the hassle of tracking you down; take care of this today.
The fee for the fall semester is $24 ($13 registration, $1 student government, $10 health). If you pay by check, please make it payable to Redwood Symphony. If you feel you have a legitimate reason not to enroll, please see Claudia Herzog (violin).
There will be three volunteer reading sessions, scheduled between concert sets, on Oct. 9, Dec. 11, and Feb. 19. We haven't tried this before, so there might be bugs in the system. If you would like to conduct a piece at one of these sessions, do the following:
Once we have our list of pieces and conductors, Eric will conduct an informal poll of the orchestra to make sure we can do the selected pieces. Then we'll post a sign-up list for orchestra members so we know who's coming. Conductors will be responsible for doing any extra recruiting, with possible help from Eric and Kristin.
[Ed. note: Please don't vote against my piece!
I want to conduct Nancy
Bloomer Deussen's "Reflections on the Hudson."]
We want to proactively contact members of the audience who have either contributed funds or have committed to season subscriptions in the past. Please help us re-contact these people and get them set for next season.
Hewlett Packard has an all-volunteer corporate orchestra. Despite having lots of enthusiastic musicians within the company, we use several people from outside HP as well.
If you would enjoy participating in a very informal, "just-for-fun" group, we'd love to have you! In particular, we are strongly in need of brass players. Strings, oboe, etc. are welcome too. And anyone is welcome to volunteer as the last-minute substitute list.
Rehearsals and concerts are typically at noon, one or two days each week, plus a few evening rehearsals. Concerts are typically at noon, plus an evening "Friends and Family" concert.
If you're interested, please see HPSO's Principal Conductor, George Yefchak (oboe) or visit our web site.
If anybody out there is a software type looking for a job (or willing to be hired away from the one you have!), you might consider Euphonix (in Palo Alto). We make incredibly awesome digitally-controlled mixing consoles and audio equipment for recording studios and the like. Musicians are particularly welcome (we have some brass, a violinist, and way too many guitar players at the moment ). If you are interested, or just curious, please check out our web page at www.euphonix.com and/or talk to Keith Meyer (bass trombone). Keith may be reached at kmeyer@euphonix.com.
