On Thursday, November 7, RWS Executive Director Claudia Herzog appeared before the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission (RCCCC) to request a grant to cover the orchestra's expenses for the upcoming December concert. The Commission, which had sponsored our 1993 appearance at the Fox Theater, was glad to see us again. As one commissioner noted, symphonic music is a "pure" art and deserves special attention from RCCCC.
After some debate, the Commission awarded RWS $2,000. We are grateful to the Commission for its support and hope this will become a regular partnership. Special thanks to Claudia for writing the grant proposal and presenting it to the Commission!

As you know, this season Redwood Symphony has formalized its membership policy. In a nutshell, the orchestra now consists of a core of permanent members, supplemented with substitutes as needed for each concert. See the Members' Handbook for details. (Get a Handbook from Kristin if you don't have one.)
To reflect the new policy, starting with this concert we'll be changing how we list musicians in our program booklets. In the past we have listed only those musicians appearing at a given concert. Now we will list all members of Redwood Symphony, including those missing the set or on leave (as well as any substitutes who are joining us for the concert). We will still call out the principals of each piece and players of English horns, contrabassoons, etc.
This change will bring our musician listing in line with those of professional and better community groups. It will lend stability to the orchestra's appearance to our audience, and it will give recognition to members who cannot do a set or are not needed due to orchestration. And it will be one more benefit of membership of the orchestra.
