Members of the orchestra have voted to accept an invitation to play at the Norway Day Festival in San Francisco on Saturday, May 2, 1998. The Festival, in its fourth year, is expected to draw nearly 3,000 people over its two-day run. Held at Fort Mason Pavilion, the festival consists of craft and food booths offering exclusively Norwegian wares, and an auditorium with a professional stage, lighting and sound system.
Redwood Symphony has been invited to play processional music at the 10:00 A.M. Opening Ceremonies, which will be attended by the Norwegian Consul General. Following that we will play Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite.
In all likelihood we'll be done playing by noon.
The Stanford - Notre Dame game starts at 12:30 P.M. this Saturday, so traffic may be an issue on the way to our dress rehearsal. They are expecting a crowd in excess of 70,000, with lots of tailgating all morning.
From Cañada College Admissions and Records:
Please note that there is an error in the 1997/98 Academic Calendar. Please change the date on your copy for Spring 1998 Commencement. Commencement will be on Thursday, June 4, 1998.
Oops--due to this administrative error, we believed the stage
and band room would be unavailable on Wednesday, June 3; so we
were forced to schedule that week's rehearsal for Friday, June 5.
That's what your printed calendars say. As you can see, rehearsal
space will be available for us on June 3. So we are moving the
rehearsal that week back to the usual Wednesday, June 3, 1998. ![]()
If you've been in Redwood Symphony for a number of years, you may have accumulated 12 or more hours of course credit at Cañada College. If so, and your grades have been good, you may be receiving an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two-Year College. Famous members of Phi Theta Kappa include former UN ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, news anchor Jim Lehrer, astronaut Fred Haise, and entrepreneur Ross Perot. Fast company indeed.
A little research reveals that you may well be eligible, even with only Redwood Symphony in your curriculum. The Cañada College chapter is just getting off the ground. If you're interested, contact Paul Roschelli at Cañada, through the college office.

I can't pass up the opportunty to advertise that the Hewlett-Packard Symphony Orchestra was featured in a front-page story in the San Jose Mercury News on Monday, September 22. This story, describing company-supported musical groups, featured three photos of the HPSO and mentioned the HP Choir.
The HPSO includes several members who play with RWS, including Doug McCracken (bassoon), Doug Perry (violin), Annette Grot (violin), Claudia Zornow (tuba!), and me (principal conductor / oboe). You can see a copy of the article online at here.
Announcing the release of Ariel View, a CD featuring Tone Poems for Violin and Piano composed and performed by Karen Bentley and Bruce Hanifan. For information, see the Ariel View web page.
