Executive Director Snares $1K for Family Concert

On August 6, 1998, Redwood Symphony Executive Director Claudia Herzog won a $990 grant from the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission to fund our Family Concert. The funds will go to defray our expenses, such as fees for music rental and Walter the Giant Storyteller. The grant will also allow us to make a limited number of tickets available free to deserving children. See Claudia (violin) if you know of some prospects to receive these tickets, or have any other ideas for promoting this great event.

ACSO Conference

--Claudia Herzog

The ACSO (Association of California Symphony Orchestras) conference, held in San Francisco at the Miyako Hotel this year, was a great success. Peter Stahl (oboe), Claudia Herzog (violin), Eric Kujawsky (music director) and Griff Derryberry (viola) attended. Topics discussed included how to build audiences, how to create a better season brochure, how to effectively promote concerts/your group/the arts, how to run a better Board of Directors, how to get more funding, and many other topics. As was the case the last two years, we all came back form the event with lots of great ideas. If you would like to hear more about the event, please contact Claudia Herzog. [Note Claudia's new contact info below.] She will include you in a mailing list with summaries of the events we all attended.

Under New Management

Our new orchestra manager is Floyd Carter (violin). You can reach him by phone at 650-968-4246 or by e-mail at AeroPlyCo@aol.com. Please notify Floyd if you'll miss any rehearsals. We can even help you find a sub!

Error Error

Next season's final concert is Sunday, June 13th, not Saturday June 12th as some listings had indicated.

Claudia's New Contact Info

Our Executive Director, Claudia Herzog (violin) may now be reached as follows:

Volunteers Needed
Gee, What Else is New?

We still need volunteers for the concerts. Please let us know if you have friends, family or colleagues who would be willing to help do pre-concert set-up, usher, serve snacks, help us count audience members, and so forth. Please e-mail Valerie Sarfaty  or contact Claudia Herzog if you are interested.

Volunteer Orchestras Are Needed Too

Eric has two extra, non-Redwood Symphony gigs that he'd like people to reserve time for and play in, if possible:

The All-American program will include Copland's Outdoor Overture; On the Trail from the Grand Canyon Suite, a medley of tunes from West Side Story, and Rhapsody in Blue (still looking for a pianist).

Waltzes, polkas and plenty of free champagne and desserts.

Babies? Weddings?
What Will Happen Next?

Brian Link (bass) and Kristin Link (violin / assistant conductor) report the successful adoption of a new baby:

Evan was born 1:00 a.m. Wednesday,
July 15. ... He's healthy and
beautiful. We're ecstatic and tired.
He already is very comforted by our
singing. Recorded music just puts
him to sleep so far.

Meanwhile, wedding rumors include:

[Ed. Note: This story seems to imply that one can have a social life while performing in, and volunteering for, the orchestra. Please explain? smile.gif (863 bytes)]

We'd Never Do This, Right?

From the internet (name withheld):

Once I played it [Pines of Rome] in an orchestra which had a conductor who was more enamored of brute force than with finesse. He brought in an entire brass section from a couple of high school bands to supplement the orchestra in the last movement. During the dress rehearsal, as we played this movement, at the beginning of each new section, he kept calling for more and more sound, waving his arms wildly, grimacing, turning red, purple and other colors, perspiring, etc. Just when you thought the music couldn't get any louder, he would gesticulate violently to the brass and percussion, asking for still more. At the intermission, I had had a cup of coffee, and had the empty Styrofoam cup on stage with me. I was getting so disgusted, that a fiendish scheme began to hatch in my head. I stopped playing (no one noticed!) and placed the cup, upside down, right beside my right foot. At the final climax, when things were at their most frantic, I stomped as hard as I could on the cup, which causes a loud explosive sound. I figured I would probably get fired from the orchestra, but at that moment I didn't really care. Well, not only did my antics not disrupt the rehearsal, the only person in the orchestra who heard what I had done was the flutist who sat right in front of me, on a riser considerably lower than mine. Her ear was about 18 inches from the cup. It didn't matter. Even I myself didn't hear anything, but I rather enjoyed working off some frustration. My colleagues in the clarinet/bassoon row enjoyed the show, and still sometimes comment about that episode, some 15 years later. By the way, the audience loved the performance (even without the Styrofoam cup).

[Ed. Note: I really love the Pines of Rome. And it should indeed be played loudly.]

Coming Soon

--George Yefchak

The new season brochure was sent to Goodco Press last week. We hope to pick up our finished copies on Friday or Monday. We have a radically new layout this season. I hope you'll like it!

This is a Web version of text from the newsletter "Redwood Symphony Notepad" which is distributed to members of the Redwood Symphony at rehearsals. The newsletter and this online version are edited by George Yefchak.
