April 25th, just two weeks after our Mahler Eighth, is the annual Redwood Symphony Family Concert. This is one of the most important performances we give, as we introduce a new generation of listeners to our great art form. Aimed primarily at the primary-school set, this concert will feature the piece Phil Harmonic and his Fabulous Orchestra, as well as works by Liszt and Sousa. There will be a "tour of the orchestra" at 2:00 P.M., followed by the short concert at 3:00.
If you have any children, know any children, or have ever seen any children, now is the time to start talking up this concert. We want to fill the house and bring this uniquely educational program to the widest possible audience. Tickets will be available soon.
This concert is a regular part of the Redwood Symphony season, and is not optional for regular members. If you absolutely cannot play the set, you must tell orchestra manager Floyd Carter (violin) now so we can recruit a substitute for you.
After nearly four years being our Executive Director, Claudia Herzog has decided to move to other activities. We're now pleased to welcome Barbara Mortkowitz as our new Executive Director. Barbara is completing her Master's Degree at the Stanford music department, and was once a piano student of Rachel Harvey's father.
Redwood Symphony will perform a Saturday night Summer War-horse concert this July. It should be a lot of fun, and there are just three rehearsals. Programming is still coming together, but we'll probably do a popular overture, followed by a Tchaikovsky symphony. David Korevaar will play the Emperor piano concert. All grand nineteenth-century music to set off our all-twentieth-century 1999-2000 season. So, save these dates:
We need lots of volunteers to help this weekend, especially for the reception in the lobby after the concert. If you can help (or have friends or relatives that can), please see Mia Astar (violin).
Remember, volunteers get in free!
You have an e-mail address, but you're not receiving the thousands of Redwood Symphony messages that fly through cyberspace each week? If so, that means you're not on our e-mail list. Please make sure Eric (the keeper of our most up-to-date list) has your current e-mail address!
Our shirts are ready. Except due to an accounting error, a few less XL and XXL shirts were ordered than we need. If you haven't paid, please have your cash or checks (to Redwood Symphony) today.
Next season's schedule, as published in the previous Notepad issue, has changed slightly. The Five Sacred Trees, featuring Maria Yuin on bassoon, is now on our first concert, and Karen Bentley will perform the Prokofiev No. 2 on the second concert. The revised schedule will appear in this weekend's concert program. But, an error was discovered after we went to pressthe date for the second concert is November 21, 1999 (not the 23rd).
